Payroll Manager / Bookkeeper

Our client is a well-established and highly respected independent firm of Chartered Accountants, tax, and business advisers in Leeds, Yorkshire.

Due to recent changes, they are now seeking a Payroll Manager / Bookkeeper to take full responsibility for payroll processing while also assisting with bookkeeping duties.

The Role

  • End-to-end payroll processing for a portfolio of clients
  • Managing auto-enrolment pension schemes, including processing pension contributions and compliance reporting.
  • Handling statutory payments such as SSP, SMP, and SPP.
  • Processing payroll journals and submitting Real Time Information (RTI) to HMRC.
  • Ensuring compliance with HMRC regulations and staying updated on payroll legislation changes.
  • Producing P45s, P60s, and payroll-related reports for clients.
  • Managing payroll queries from clients and employees.
  • Processing sales and purchase invoices.
  • Bank reconciliations and reconciling control accounts.
  • Preparing and submitting VAT returns.
  • Assisting in the preparation of management accounts.

About You

  • Proven payroll experience (must be confident handling payroll independently).
  • Experience in auto-enrolment pensions and HMRC payroll compliance.
  • Knowledge of payroll software such as Sage Payroll, BrightPay, Xero Payroll, or similar.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in payroll processing.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to handle payroll queries.
  • Good communication skills for client interactions.
  • Desirable:
  • Experience with cloud-based bookkeeping software (Xero, QuickBooks, Sage).
  • AAT qualified or qualified by experience in bookkeeping/accounting.
  • Experience working within an accountancy practice or payroll bureau.
