This Yard Operative / Yard Controller role is ideal for someone with previous experience within a transport yard, logistics, fleet, or distribution environment who understands the importance of organisation, vehicle movement, and operational efficiency.

This Yard Operative / Yard Controller position plays a key role in ensuring the smooth day-to-day running of the yard, supporting transport operations, vehicle compliance, and trailer management. The role is hands-on and physically active, involving regular movement around the yard and between vehicles throughout the day.

The Role

  • Manage the daily organisation and running of the transport yard as a Yard Operative / Yard Controller
  • Liaise closely with shunters and drivers to ensure trailers are positioned correctly within the yard
  • Carry out daily vehicle and trailer inspections including fuel checks and general condition monitoring
  • Ensure yard space is organised efficiently to support operational flow and vehicle access
  • Liaise with the Compliance Manager regarding servicing, defects, and maintenance scheduling
  • Support transport operations by ensuring trailers and vehicles are available for planned movements
  • Maintain high standards of health & safety, housekeeping, and yard organisation
  • Assist with general operational duties to support the wider transport team

About You

  • Previous experience within a transport, logistics, fleet, warehouse, or yard environment
  • Good understanding of transport yard operations and vehicle movement processes
  • Confident communicating with drivers, shunters, and operational teams
  • Reliable, organised, and able to work independently
  • Comfortable working outdoors in a physically demanding role
  • Strong awareness of health & safety within transport or logistics settings
  • HGV licence is not required but would be advantageous
  • Previous experience in a similar Yard Operative / Yard Controller role is beneficial
